LUXEMBOURG - European Islamic finance: still waiting in the wings

LUXEMBOURGFORFINANCE LFF.LU - Global Islamic finance assets have remained flat at around 1 trillion dollars, of which 6% is held in investment funds. This is the topline figure of the shortly-to-be-published 2011 edition of Ernst & Young's Islamic funds report, which has become a reference in the industry. It was also the only figure leaked by E&Y, at an Islamic finance seminar they hosted within the framework of the Luxembourg AIF Club. This did not dampen a debate on how to expand the market. LUXEMBOURG - No debut sovereign sukuk out of Luxembourg for the moment

Perhaps it is not surprising that Luxembourg has put a dampener on any speculation that it may go to the international market to raise funds through a debut Sukuk issuance. Yves Mersch, governor of the Banque Centrale de Luxembourg, speaking to reporters at the 8th Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) Summit on May 12-13 which was held in the Duchy and in Europe for the first time and hosted by the central bank, confirmed that the Luxembourg government is in no hurry to issue a sukuk because there are currently no compelling reasons for doing so. IRELAND - EVENTS - Islamic finance conference for Dublin (Apil 11, 2011)

A conference on Islamic finance opportunities for Ireland is to be held on Monday 11 April 2011 in the Clarion Hotel, IFSC, Dublin.

The event will discuss both the domestic and global banking and corporate opportunities including the role of the IFSC as a Western hub for wholesale Islamic finance services.
The Islamic finance sector’s global worth is estimated to be between €870bn and €990bn, with an annual growth rate of 15% to 20%.
