UK - UEL launches Islamic Banking and Finance Centre

Dr Omar Masood

The launch of the Islamic Banking and Finance centre will see the University of East London become a central figure in one of the fastest growing financial sectors in the marketplace.

The Centre will offer postgraduate degrees in Islamic banking and finance and become a vital hub for international scholars who are looking to conduct research in this field. London has become the largest international centre for Islamic finance outside the Muslim world, largely as a result of the City's role as a centre for Middle Eastern and Asian banking. The opportunity for the University of East London is clear; it is situated in an area where the population is nearly 40% Muslim (from which there will be a waiting student base) and is therefore the natural home as the centre of excellence in Islamic Finance within the UK. UEL is also located within minutes of Canary Wharf - London’s banking district. (source)

Speaking at the launch of the Islamic Banking and Finance Centre in ExCel London last week, Vice Chancellor of the University of East London, Professor Patrick McGhee, said: “This is the culmination of many months of hard work and is a genuinely exciting project. Islamic banking is one of the fastest growing sectors in the financial marketplace; now is the perfect time for academics to focus on this area and explore how western and Islamic financial institutions can work more effectively together.”

Dr Omar Masood, Director of the UEL Islamic Banking and Finance Centre, said: “I have always been clear about my desire to see an Islamic Banking and Finance centre set up. I am now realising my dream. There is no more suitable place in London – or the UK for that matter –than east London for an institution of this nature. Our aim is to be the UK’s leading international centre of excellence for human capital and business development in Islamic finance.”

The Islamic Banking and Finance Centre will be based in the Royal Docks Business School and offer PhD and Masters programmes, short courses and consultancy in the areas of Islamic finance, plus tailor made short courses. These courses are available to start in September 2011.

Key speakers at the launch event included Pro-Vice-Chancellor International, John Shaw and Professor Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, Vice Chancellor at one of Malaysia’s leading universities, Universiti Teknologi Mari (UiTM). There were also a host of various international banking and diplomatic representatives in the audience, while entertainment was provided by double MOBO award winner and UEL Honorary Graduate, YolanDa Brown.
