LONDON: Malaysia welcomes wider British investments, particularly in high technology and value-added and knowledge-based industries.
There were also many projects that British companies in partnership with their Malaysian counterparts would be able to explore, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
These projects included those in business services, education, healthcare, electrical and electronics, green technology, renewable energy and information communication technology, the Prime Minister added. (source)
He was confident that the strength of British companies in sectors like education, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and knowledge-driven industries would give them an edge in seizing opportunities.
“Malaysia's strong foundation in halal products and services and Islamic finance also offers opportunities for exciting partnerships with UK companies,” he said when addressing a roundtable meeting with captains of industry at a hotel here yesterday.
Among those who took part in the hour-long session were chieftains from Petrofac Ltd, Rolls-Royce Plc, University of Leeds, Dyson Ltd, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University of Nottingham, Tetronics Ltd, BAE Systems and Fluor Ltd.
Najib said that last year, Malaysia's trade with Britain totalled US$4.1bil and the country's exports amounted to US$2.3bil, an increase of 1.6% compared to 2009.
Britain is Malaysia's 18th largest trading partner.
He added that Malaysia remained a favoured investment destination for foreign investors.
Last year, foreign direct investment into the country increased by about 540% to US$9bil compared with US$1.4bil in 2009.
After the roundtable discussion, Najib received courtesy calls from Saudi Central Bank governor Mohamed Al Jaser and Standard Chartered board chairman Sir John Peace.
Najib flew to the Royal Air Force Northolt station and viewed the display and training facilities of the Eurofight Typhoon combat aircraft.
He and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor will have an audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace today.
Later, Najib will have a luncheon meeting with his counterpart David Cameron.
